Saturday June 23rd book signing with "Handmade Houses" author Richard Olsen to also include amazing Big Sur-centric slideshow!

Posted on:

So we’re very excited for the June 23rd event at the Library, a book signing with Richard Olsen, author of “Handmade Houses.” (Call us and buy one! 831-667-2574)

Neil circa '95, courtesy of Richard Olsen

You may heard about it.  Olsen’s book looks at the roots of the “green” architecture movement and profiles incredible dwellings from around the globe, including – yep – Big Sur.  (In fact, our boss’s home is in the book.)

But there’ll be more – much more!

The Big Sur quotient of the evening just quintupled, as Richard has also prepared an hour-long Big Sur-specific slideshow, with material that will be of special interest to locals, such as…

* Big Sur’s role in the evolution of the “wood-butcher” style

* A lot of family photos from the Trotter family

* Some very early Jean Varda in Big Sur images, and

* Certain photos that didn’t make it in his book, like Neil Young’s 1975 tour bus designed by Roger Somers (see the photo!)

The event will start at 8pm, with a discussion of the book with the author, with a slideshow of beautiful pictures from the book as well as supplementary photos to follow when it is dark.  Q&A with the author and photographer Lucy Goodhart after this.

Coffee & tea will be served and copies of the book available for sale at the event.

Don’t get us wrong, we love the big rock shows here at the Library.  But these Big Sur community-driven events, focusing on local authors and artists, are really super-special.  We encourage you to attend!

Any questions?   Call  us!  831-667-2574

Carolyn Mary Kleefeld, Peter Tabin Jones, and Martin Shears in an evening of art, poetry and music – this Sunday at the Library!

Posted on:

Take it away, Monterey County Weekly who just ran a fantastic piece on this event, which will be held Sunday, June 17th at the Henry Miller Library. (This event is free/by donation, more info here.)

On Sunday, another literary event is transplanted to our shores – specifically, Big Sur’s Henry Miller Library – by way of the U.K. This one celebrates the 11th book of English-born painter and poet Carolyn Mary Kleefeld, a fixture on the Big Sur arts scene since 1980.

Her 223-page hardcover book, Psyche of Mirrors: A Promenade of Portraits, serves as a 25-year retrospective of her work. The poems, essays and journal entries are culled mostly from the 2000s, and the book is illustrated with her symbolic, mystical, expressionistic paintings.

There are passages of lusty commiseration with the ocean and moon, invocation of spirits and muses, and conjurings of love and the Creative Spirit, filed under chapters named “Orphic Lovers” and “Quintessential Creators.”

Love, says Kleefeld, is her highest calling: “The love poems are from that exalted place, but deeply connected to the Earth,” she says. “The most ideal love is a Platonic love that pours from the universe into all things.”

Musician Martin Shears will accompany Kleefeld’s reading. And she brings her Welsh “poet brother” and professor Peter Thabit Jones to read from his book Poems from a Cabin on Big Sur.”

Times are tough and let’s be real: most of us don’t have $150 jinglin’ in our Diesel jeans (although did you check underneath the futon?)

Nonetheless, you may want to donate to the Library as part of our big 2012 fundraising drive so we can comply with federal and state safety requirements, and thereby harvest a bounty of our bountiful rewards.

future slave-traderFor example, Rimbaud’s “derangement of the senses” is your modus operandi.  (Your delivery mechanism of choice is Goldschläger.)

As such, you want to become an Assassin and get:

* Three (3) pairs of tickets for three (3) shows for the next three (3) years, plus

* A t-shirt

* 10% discount

* Bumper sticker

* A copy of the HML book, and

* An invite to our donor celebration party.

One problem: you don’t have $1,500 handy.  (Actually… did you check in that “no man’s land” in your car between the passenger seat floor and parking brake?)

But it’s no biggie!   You can donate in installments – heck, any installment you like!  Just go here and get the ball rolling.  Or just call us at 831-667-2574.

So now you donate a set amount to the Library on a monthly basis.  Think of it like student loans, minus the lifetime of regret and financial ruin.

Some fundraising food for thought around the awesomeness of our financial model (and how it can't save us this time)

Posted on:

So let us all prepare for a new way of thinking for the next month or so.

Namely, the fact we’re embarking upon a big fundraising effort to ensure the Library continues to operate and comply with health and safety laws.  (And if you’ve yet to do so, get your tickets for the astonishing Philip Glass/Joanna Newsom/Tim Fain show here before it sells out.)

As you immerse yourself in this new reality and think about possibly donating, we’ll be passing along various thought-pieces/food for thought kinds of things. Things to get you thinking…(about donating.  The rewards are incredible; click here.)

For example.  This is the first “official” capital improvement fundraising request we have sent – ever.

Shiny happy people: HMML staff and volunteers, circa 2011!

This is no coincidence. The Library’s funding model is unique: we subsist thanks to book sales, event-related income, “micro” donations, and small grants.  We think that’s cool.

As you know, most non-profits are always looking for money and are always fundraising.  Nothing wrong with that, of course.  But we’ve been fortunate to not have to do that: we get great shows, which helps pay the bills (a little); people keep buying books here, bucking a national trend, and people leave money in our donation boxes.

Last year’s Kickstarter thing amazing, but, given our 30-year history, was kind of an anomaly from a fund-raising perspective, and regardless, the figure we needed to raise was, to quote my old boss in DC – and forgive me for this – “mice nuts” compared to the challenge we’re facing.

Bottom line: our “no-donation-harassment” model worked swimmingly — 30 years, really! – until now.  We’re in a bind.

Another bottom line: Non-profits and for-profit businesses do renovation work all the time; we’re no different.  (Well, I mean, we are a little different from your typical business.)

Last bottom line: Your generous financial support is greatly appreciated!   Thank you!
