Henry Miller Library new stage construction update: things are, like, happening!

Posted on:

Oh man.  You guys are amazing.  After, like, 48 hours, we’re knocking on the door of our Kickstarter goal.  Thanks so much!!

Just wanted to say thanks.  It’s incredible – it could, like, be a record or something…

Also, for all you out-of-towners in case you haven’t heard:  Rt. 1 washed out about 20 miles north of here. Scary stuff.  Amazingly no one was injured.

No joke.

The road is closed indefinitely.  No traffic coming down from the north.

This is bad news for Big Sur businesses, including the Library, who are reliant on tourists and stuff.  No one knows how long it’ll be closed for!

But we’re calm.  No looting or hording of dry goods just yet.  No Mayan apocalyptic ramblings.  And good God, no soul-searching!

But something to keep in mind, I guess, when you ruminate on our Kickstarter project; basically – and sadly – we’ll be taking a huge financial hit for the foreseeable future given this closure.  Ugh.

Enough with the housekeeping.  Back to the task at hand, namely this:  the new stage is slowly but surely coming together!  The momentum is tangible, if not outright palatable.

Here is how things looked when I wrote this.  There’s, like, a bunch of stuff out.

That’s Tobin loitering by the truck, and that’s the redwood planks covered in tarps, to the left.

To the right of the truck, you’ll see a big redwood.  We planned it out so that if you’re in the audience, the redwood will perfectly bisect the stage – right down the middle.

The dudes were listening to The Black Keys.

And here we see Todd and Tobin standing over a table saw.  Neither is wearing goggles.  Why is that?  I guess they want to look tough for the blog.

Fun fact: the new stage will come out farther into the audience than the old one.  It will also face slightly more to the Northeast (or was it Southwest?)

Here’s a shot of that beautiful mess from another angle:

This is, naturally, if you are facing the stage from the audience (no outside food and drinks please; there’s also a no ‘ins-and-outs’ policy!)

What will happen next?  Will the stage, like, be built more?  Will Todd and Tobin have a fight?  Will I find a way to sneak my head into another shot?

Stay tuned!

And visit us on Kickstarter!

Day 1 of stage construction: the redwood arrives from, like, Salinas!

Posted on:

So!  Day 1 – kinda – of this lil’ fundraising thingie for our new stage.  Thanks so much for all who’ve donated so far.  We really appreciate it.  (More information on reward goodies for your donations here.)

And we weren’t lying when we said yall’ed get daily updates of our new stage construction.*

Obviously the old stage was destroyed; we’ve been through that already.  So enter the new wood for the stage.  Day 1.  A very big day indeed.

When we got the call saying that the truck was leaving Salinas or something, stacked with beautiful recycled redwood planks, well, it was like Christmas morning.

And then the truck arrived (left.)

I admit, the photo could be better, but y’know, what can you do?

Obviously you’ll see the big whole where the stage used to be; we even removed the piles of rubble that Sven the Hippie sifted through in torment and angst. Poor guy.

Sufficiently intrigued, you’re probably also saying, “Wow, that’s amazing, can I get a close up of the wood?”  To which we say, “ok, sure.”

So, over here is a close-up of the redwood.  Not much additional analysis is needed I guess, except for the fact it seems like an indigenous floating Brillo pad somehow made it’s way into the shot.

Exciting as this is, that’s all we have for you now.  Next: the stage begins to take shape!  Stay tuned and please visit our Kickstarter page to donate.

Thanks!

* We have artistic license, however.  Like, the stage will be built across a week, but we may stretch it out over the course of the fundraising period.  Hope that’s ok.

Exclusive!! HML is building a new stage for the Animal Collective show!

Posted on:

So remember when we intentionally destroyed our stage?  Then said how were gonna build a new one?

Well, that time has arrived.  And we need your financial (tax-deductible!) help.

Henry Miller Library, your favorite non-profit art space, is partnering with the super-cool Kickstarter platform, to raise money to help cover the costs (and then some) of our new stage.

Made of recycled redwood, the stage will serve as a functional and sustainable structure, as well as a beautiful artistic statement integrated into its natural surroundings.

The stage will be completed in time for our big “Start of the Summer Season” show: Animal Collective on April 14th!

Your donations are tax-deductible and entitle you to super-cool rewards.

To find out how to donate please check out our project on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/gSEEnP

Also, please fwd this post to your friends; anything you can help with would naturally be very appreciated.

We’ll be tracking the construction of the new stage on this very blog, on a daily basis.

We are stoked!

Attn: Animal Collective (and all other) would-be campers

Posted on:

The calls are already starting to come in.

“Where’s a good place to camp by the library?”

“What’s the closest campsite to the library?”

“Where’s a good place to camp that is closest to the library?”

Along with art, customer service is our passion, and we love to help, but there’s a better way, and it’s checking out all the nearby Big Sur camping options at our online store.

For example, did you know Treebones Resort has the best (and only) sushi in Big Sur?  Well, that’s nice, but it’s not gonna help you the Animal Collective weekend – it’s kinda far from the Library.

See you soon!

John Waters Benefit at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur! Have dinner with him

Posted on:

Fun fact: in 2009, the Kennedy Center did their annual honors thing, celebrating pioneers in the art, music, and theater world.

Inductees for that year included Oprah Winfrey,  Merle Haggard, dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones, composer Jerry Herman, and some bloke named Paul McCartney.

What’s not known is that director John Waters almost made the cut.  Here’s an excerpt from his nomination bid:

“His historic work, characterized by grotesque violence, the antagonizing of dwarfs, people eating dog feces, and timeless characters like Fat Fuck Frank and Sherif Shitface has created a rich and complex landscape in which forces viewers to look inward.”

Sadly, John fell one vote short.*  Apparently Kennedy Center trustee Jimmy Carter couldn’t be persuaded.

Well, you win some and lose some.

On the bright side, we are proud to announce “An Evening with John Waters,” on Saturday August 13th.

The event will include an intimate dinner with John, a one-hour private meet-and-greet, and the big night-time show: a one-man, stand-up event in which he muses about his career and stuff in general.  Q & A to follow.

Better yet, you can bid for a private dinner with him!  All proceeds go to the Library.  The current highest bid is $1,500.

Details at the Henry Miller Library home page!

And after that, tequila shots at Fernwood!!!

The show has played to sold-out audiences in New York, Copenhagen, Boston, San Francisco, Tucson, Washington (DC), Sydney (Australia), and beyond!

* This may not be entirely true.

Bill Callahan (aka Smog) at the Henry Miller Library – June 19th!

Posted on:

Anybody out there remember AP (Alternative Press) magazine?  I think it’s still around.  Nowadays it’s all about like, emo pop punk bands and stuff; lots of skinny Midwest bros with hair products.  But!  Back in the 90s, AP – along with Magnet – was the indie rock bible-magazine.  It ruled.

Every month I’d buy their album of the week or whatever.

Back sometime in 1993, their big pick was “Julius Caesar,” by Smog.  I bought it.  It was amazing.

Now remember, we’re talking a pre-Internet era, so you had no MP3 samples or whatever.  You just took the plunge.

Also, due to the Internet-less-ness of the times, it was still possible to voluntarily maintain some sort of mystique as an artist.  And boy, did Smog have a mystique.  I knew his real name was Bill Callahan, and I knew he recorded the disc alone, on a 4-track, in his room (in Chicago?)

That was it.

The rest of what I knew was shaped by the album itself; specifically this: Bill Callahan is a twisted, dark, brilliant dude.

The record is like peeling back the lid of some terrifying id (Bill’s.)  The songs are about vengeance (“Your Wedding,” key lyric – “I’m gonna be drunk/ So drunk/ At your wedding), the occasional Dadaist silliness (“I am Star Wars!” – he samples the Rolling Stones!) and what can only be described as psychotic terror (“Stalled on the Tracks;” key lyric, “Stalled on the tracks/ A turtle on it’s back…”)

Dude was messed up.

Throw in the eerie, analog-rich, home-recording techniques (not unlike Neutral Milk Hotel records) and you have an instant early 90′s Drag City cassette classic!

That was a long time ago.

Since then Bill has (kinda) re-invented himself, less as a bug-eyed loner possessed by tortured spirits, and more as a dry, still-slightly-rough-around-the-edges crooner.  He’s one smooth operator!  It must be the baritone that drives the ladies wild.

My friend John saw him five years ago in Virigina, and he compared him to Leonard Cohen.

Anyway, Bill Callahan – billed as, yes, Bill Callahan – is playing the Henry Miller Library on June 19th!  Ticket info on the Henry Miller Library website.

I wonder if anyone is still reading this?

Vinyl in the Woods – vendors confirmed (Amoeba, Finders Keepers) and room for more!

Posted on:

Things are coming together for the “Best Weekend Ever” – Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-30th. Consider this, like, a weekly pull-up (insert corporate lingo here) or whatever.

A few things:

* Confirmed vendors for Vinyl in the Woods (record fair on May 28th) so far: the esteemed Amoeba Records, Finders/Keepers Records, San Francisco’s Groove Merchant, Santa Cruz’s Metamusic, Monterey’s Vinyl Revolution, independent sellers, and more to follow!

* There is still room for vendors! Tables are $60; max 2 tables per person.  Call 831-667-2574 to reserve your spot!

Amoeba Records!

* In case you forgot, on the 27th, there’ll be the Wrecking Crew movie, and the Chris Robinson (of the Black Crowes) will play the 28th and 29th!

* And…there may be a show on the 30th that will truly be incredible.  Maybe.

It will be sick, sick, sick.

Make your Big Sur camping plans now, eh?

"He's a Rebel?" Yeah, the Wrecking Crew played on that

Posted on:

My bro Ed says “He’s a Rebel” is the best rock song ever. I think he’s right. Mostly. Guess I’d put “Long Tall Sally” up there too (predictable, I know.)

Either way,”Rebel,” penned by one Mr. Gene Pitney, perfectly encapsulates Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” vibe (although not as well as some Righteous Brothers tunes) and, more applicably, has the Wrecking Crew playing on it!

The same Wrecking Crew honored in a film by the same name, that’ll be showing here, at the Henry Miller Library, on May 27th.

So.  “He’s a Rebel.”  Greatest rock song ever?  No! “Jumpin’ Jack Flash!”

Bluegrass legends Cache Valley Drifters – Thurs. March 3rd at the Henry Miller Library!!

Posted on:

It’s the last time we’ll say it. Maybe.

Bluegrass legends, the Cache (pronounced “Cash”) Valley Drifters, play here on the 3rd.  It’s their first-ever Big Sur show, and better yet, it will be in doors, allowing for their high, lonesome, three-part harmonies to reverberate throughout our small space and wooden walls.  (The acoustics are awesome.)

The CVD stray from the typical bluegrass script of, say, Blue Monroe-y, Appalachia standards, and put new, fascinating twists of rock jams like “White Room” and “Boy in a Bubble.”  That’s cool.

Space is limited and we’re asking for a “suggested” donation of $20.

Get your tickets here: http://henrymiller.org/events.html#CVD or call us to reserve a spot: 831-667-2574

See you here!!
